How Sports Betting Odds Work
Learn how sports betting odds work, including positive and negative American odds, and how to calculate potential payouts.
Live betting lets you wager while a game is in play, with odds that move as the score changes. Learn how live odds work, when a bet is official and a worked example.

Live sports betting means placing wagers while a game is already being played. The sportsbook keeps updating the odds and markets as the score, the clock and the momentum change, so the price you see can be different a minute later. At Lunaris, a live wager is official only once the sportsbook accepts it and gives it a ticket number, and live wagers are always subject to availability and acceptance.
Before kick-off, odds reflect what is expected to happen. Once the game starts, they react to what is actually happening:
Before the game, Team A is +120 to win. At halftime they trail by 10 points and the live moneyline moves to +250.
| Odds | $20 wager returns | |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-game moneyline | +120 | $44.00 |
| Live moneyline at halftime | +250 | $70.00 |
The live price pays more because Team A is now less likely to win. A bigger payout is the market's way of saying the result is harder to get, not a better deal by itself.
If the odds change or the market closes before acceptance, the bet may not be accepted at the price you saw. Accepted wagers cannot be cancelled by the player.
Depending on the sport and what is available, live markets can include:
